2018 AHEAD Program: Apply by May 22

I am pleased to announce the opening of the application period for the Bank’s 2018 Access to Housing and Economic Assistance for Development (AHEAD) Program. AHEAD is a grant program that allows our members to support targeted economic and community development projects and non-AHP eligible housing initiatives that benefit lower-income communities.

Applications will be accepted between April 24, 2018, and May 22, 2018. Only Bank members may submit applications; nonprofit organizations are invited to contact us to connect with local Bank members active in the program. We plan to announce this year’s grant recipients in early September.

The AHEAD Program is designed to boost local initiatives that target pressing community needs by creating or preserving jobs, supporting the organizational and capacity-building activities of nonprofits, delivering social services, or providing training or education programs. Total funding for AHEAD in 2018 is $1.5 million. Individual grants are expected to average between $20,000 and $50,000 and can be used to finance a wide variety of expenses, including studies and project plans and consulting or professional services.

Since launching the program in 2004, the Bank has awarded over $11.5 million in AHEAD grants to 405 projects in Arizona, California, and Nevada. In 2017, 32 members received AHEAD grants to support 51 local initiatives, including projects and programs aimed at:

  • providing job training and placement programs targeted to formerly incarcerated men and women, at-risk youth, underemployed adults, and persons with physical or mental disabilities
  • offering microlending opportunities, small business incubation services, or co-working facilities to low-income rural and urban entrepreneurs
  • assisting tribal communities with asset-building and self-sufficiency initiatives
  • increasing contracting, procurement, and manufacturing opportunities for minority- and women-owned small and local businesses
  • helping community organizations develop social enterprises to diversify and increase resources
  • supporting financial capability and economic empowerment programs in low-income communities
